What do I need to start my own website?

If you’re looking to start your own website, there are many ways to go about accomplishing this task.  However you decide to do it, there are three basic things that you will need.

A Name

The first thing you will need is a domain name.  This is the address that people will type in to get to your website.

www.jac2.com
www.mywebsite.net
www.whatever.org

The way you get a domain name is by registering the name you want at a “domain registry” website.  It costs about $10 to register your name for a year.

GoDaddy.com is where I register all my domain names.

Some Space

The next thing you’ll need is some web space.  This is where you will put your website for people to visit.  The term for this web space is “web hosting”.  What you’ll be looking for in a web host is one with enough space for your website and one that has a good “uptime” (the amount of time your website is available for other people to visit).

Again, GoDaddy.com is a good place for hosting as well.  You can get hosting for about $50 a year.

A Website

Last but not least, you’ll need a website.
