Spring is in Full Swing!
May 2008

The Schulenburg Public Library has been receiving donations from generous patrons. Patrons that have donated this month are as follows: Josephine Boxler, Tanja Cubit, Jeanette Gouldsberry, Scott Gresham, Pastor Lemae Higgs, Travis Hurd, Jan Joyner, Audrey Kalich, Ashley Meyer, Brittany Meyer, Dustin Meyer, Roy Saffel, and Olivia Sotello. The library has also received a DVD titled, “Solutions for People with Hearing Loss in Career and Education Environments” from the Texas Department of Rehabilitation Services and the Office of Deaf and Hard of Hearing Services. Memorials have also been given to the library. Books have been donated in memory of Rev. Daniel Berry. Also, books has been given in memory of Jamie Hernandez given by Cindy Lytle and Donna Holub. The library has also been grateful for the help of the following volunteers: Jon Beebe, Gloria Clifford, Michael Holcombe, Lynne Holle, and Wayne Holub.
Congratulation goes to our library director, Cindy Lytle. She has recently received the Strathmore’s Who’s Who Honors and is included in the 2008-2009 Strathmore’s Who’s Who Book. This award is limited to individuals who have demonstrated leadership and achievement in their occupation, industry, or profession.
Summer is just around the corner and the Texas Reading Club’s Summer Reading Program 2008 will begin soon. The theme this year is “Texas Reading Club Jubilee: 1958-2008! Texas Celebrates 50 Years of Reading!” The program will begin on June 2, 2008 and end on August 8, 2008. The requirements for the program are as follows: you must be from ages infant (read to me) to 12. The child must read 15 picture books or 10 chapter books to complete the program and receive a certificate. So come by the library to sign up for the 2008 Summer Reading Program!
The library will once again be holding the Summer Story Hours on Saturdays at 10am. The dates for the story hours are as follows: June 7, 14, 21, & 28, July 12, 19, & 26. Each Story hour will have a theme. The children will listen to stories, get a chance to create a fun craft to go along with the stories, and then enjoy a snack. We are also looking for wonderful volunteers to sign up to read for the story hours. If you would like to volunteer please call the library at (979) 743-3345. Our first story hour will be held on June 7, 2008 and the theme is: Sail into Summer! Join us for great books, fun crafts and yummy snacks!


Fayette County Republican Women Donated Books to Library
The Fayette County Republican Women’s organization has purchased and placed four children’s books in the Schulenburg Public Library through the Barbara Bush Literacy Project. Since Barbara Bush founded this project on March 6, 1989, many Republican women’s organizations have placed books in libraries, schools and shelters throughout the United States in support of the Barbara Bush Literary Project. The four books received byt the library are Woodrow the White House Mouse, President Adams’ Alligator and other White House Pets, and Woodrow for President by Peter W. Barnes and Cheryl Shaw Barnes; and Washingtons, D.C. ABCs by Carla Holembe, Cheryl Shaw Barnes and Peter W. Barnes.

IRS forms and booklets are available free to the public at the Library. The forms that we do not have you can print off of IRS.gov for 10 cents a copy.
· 2008 is a year of new beginnings. A new Library will begin construction this year and we will say goodbye to a building that has served the community well. The children are our future and this new library will become a place for them as well as the rest of the community. But we will continue as best as we can in the house that we are located now, 700 Bohlmann . A man came in today and said he was told we do not have a Public Library in this town, over the years, I cant tell you how many times I have heard that statement. We have free Internet access, Wireless Access, Inter Library Loan, Large Print Books, Texashare Data Bases, DVDs. VHS, Books on tape, Schulenburg Historical Information, Old Yearbooks, and lots of books available. If we do not have the information you need we will try in any way we can to help.
· The Public has been good to us over the years, donating books, DVDS, VHS, magazines and their volunteer time. Don’t stop now we can still use your donations. We especially need donations of local history, such as pictures ,books and documents for our growing genealogy section donated. The volunteers this month are Gloria Clifford, Debra Anderson, Cheryl Novak, Jon Beebe, Lynne Holle Margie Baty, and Michael Holcombe. Donations were made by Olivia Sotello, Jan Joyner, Louise Purdy, Roy Saffel, Mary Sellers, Jeanette Gouldsberry, Lemae Higgs, Sheila Brossmann, Kathy Rehak, Amanda Buchanek, Sharon Kainer.
· Children books were given as memorials for Karl Halamicek, Alfredo Valenzuela,
Laurie Kristinik and Paul Huser from Cindy Lytle and Donna Holub.

We are still taking donations for the new library such as bricks and memorials. There is still plenty needed to furnish the building.

Ready for Spring!
March 2008

Spring has arrived!! Why not take a break from mowing the yard and check out a great book from the Schulenburg Public Library? We have amazing books to help you get started on a spring flower garden and an interior decorating section that will help make any home look spring fresh.
We would like to thank Barbara Moellenbrandt, Tanja Cubit, Scott Gresham, Justa Helm, J.W. Coddou, Mary Gresham, Gloria Clifford, Art Holle, Lynne Holle, Jon Bebe, Susie Shank, Jeanette Gouldsberry, Jan Joyner, Louis Purdy, Olivia Sotello, Roy Saffel, Samantha Vestal, Shane and Tricia Mendel, Sharon Burns, and Connie Kocurek for all of their generous donations.
The Schulenburg Garden Club also donated The Garden in Winter. Walter Eyring donated 125 Years of History-Exxon Mobil. The American Egg Board donated Eggs 101 a DVD about the egg industry and how it has changed over the years. The Schulenburg Chamber of Commerce donated two copies of Schulenburg: Halfway to Everywhere. These two books will be wonderful additions to our genealogy section.
The Lance Armstrong Foundation and the American Library Association are working together to provide our library with reference materials to better serve those seeking health-related information. We have been given two LIVESTRONG Survivorship Notebooks to use as reference materials in our library. These notebooks are designed to organize and guide one’s cancer experience with information about cancer-related concerns, worksheets and stories from cancer survivors.

Fayette County Republican Women has donated
Our 50 States, A Family Adventure Across America by Lynne Cheney to the Schulenburg Public LIbrary. This contribution is made as a part of the Barbara Bush Literacy Project, a program established in 1996, by the Texas Federation of the Republican Women to honor the former First Lady. Through this and the annual Dictionary Project, FCRW hopes to contribute to citizenship education and the reading enjoyment of our community. Copies of the book are also being donated to public libraries in Flatonia, LaGrange, and Round Top.

School is Back in Session!
September 2007

Donations were made by the following patrons: Shirley Tilicek, Olivia Sotello, Louise Purdy, Jan Joyner, Sylvan Rossi, Cindy Lytle, Lynne Holle, Rose Klekar, Chad Riche, Vicki Woodard, Marsha McKinney, Scott Gresham, Barbara Hammontree, and Jeanette Gouldsberry. Roy Saffel also donated a subscription to Birds and Blooms Magazine.
Volunteers included Gloria Clifford, Megan Pavlicek, Cheryl Novak, and Jon Beebe, and Debra Anderson.
The Pilgrim’s Pride Corporation donated One Pilgrim’s Progress. This book is Bo Pilgrim’s autobiography encouraging readers not to settle for being average, but to strive for excellence as they put Jesus Christ first in their lives. The Texas Press Association donated The News in Texas: Essays in Honor of the 125th Anniversary of the Texas Press Association. A memorial was also give in memory of Jimmy Pavlik by Cindy Lytle and Donna Holub.
Disney’s Bear In-Air and Let There Be Light were given as memorials in memory of Blanche Bolling by Cindy Lytle and Donna Holub.
We have a large variety of large print books at the Library. These books are available to patrons who have difficulty reading small or normal print. They are excellent for senior citizens, the visually impaired, stationary bicycle and treadmill users, students with reading difficulties, patients recovering from head injuries or stroke, and anyone who enjoys reading larger print. These books contain the same material only in larger print. A few of our large print books include Firestorm by Iris Johansen, Echo Park by Michael Connelly, 2nd Chance by James Patterson, The Summer I Dared by Barbara Delinsky, and The Summons by John Grisham. This service is provided by the Central Texas Library System in Austin. We receive a new selection of large print books every three months. Come down to the library and check out our large selection of large print books!

Fun in the Sun!
August 2007

The Summer Reading Program was a splash this year with 132 children completing. Over 70 children and parents enjoyed time in the pool and a hot dog lunch. The Library would like to thank the many local businesses that helped make the party such a great success. These businesses are as follows: Prosperity Bank, Fayetteville Bank, Fayette Savings, Wells Fargo Bank, Dairy Queen, Dollar General. Literary Club, City of Schulenburg, Family Dollar, McDonalds, Harlans, Sonic Drive-In, Subway, and JoLane Schwenke. We would also like to thank Wayne Holub, Sylvia Gabler, Jon Beebe, Megan Pavlicek, Tyler Machicek, Mrs. Schroeder, and Mayor Roger Moellenberndt for volunteering their time. Rodney Gresser donated a memorial in memory of I.E. Clark. Books were donated in memory of Jessie Dean Reves by E.T. Reves. Cindy Lytle gave a memorial for Hazel Hazelrig. A need to know about the library- The lay representative is elected by the governing body of the library. This person serves without compensation. The lay rep’s purpose is to advise in the formulation of the annual plan for service to be offered by the library, recommend policies appropriate to service needed, evaluate services needed, counsel with administrative personnel, and recommend functions and limitations of contacts between cooperating agencies. For the past five years Jon Beebe has graciously donated his time for this position.

It’s that time of year again!! We will be sponsoring the 2007 Texas Reading Program. The purpose of this program is to encourage our youth of the community to check out books and read during the summer months. The age groups are Read-To-Me (infant to 4-years old) to age 12. Parents are required to read 15 books to the Read-To-Me level. Ages 5-9 are required to read 15 books. Ages 10-12 are required to read 10 chapter books. The theme for this program is Sail Away With Books! It will begin June 1, 2007 and end on August 13, 2007. The Library will offer activities that make reading FUN! Story time will be held on Saturdays at 10:00 a.m. You can contact the Library at (979)743-3345 for a schedule of planned events.
Encourage your child to participate in the 2007 Texas Reading Program! By doing so, you will help your child retain hard earned reading skills acquired during the school year. The library books, audiocassettes, dvds and videos available for you to check out. Your family can explore Texas from the Gulf Coast to the Piney Woods with an inexpensive trip to the library. Joining the Library is free!

The Schulenburg Public Library had a terrific summer. This summer was made a great success by Librarian Cindy Lytle, Assistant Librarian Donna Holub, college student Tristian Schwenke, high school students Nicole Gabler, Julie Moellenberndt, and Shandrae Runnels.
The Schulenburg Public Library would like to thank the many volunteers who helped make story hours, the float, and every day operation possible. Donations included ice from Tiger Tote, use of Steve Wooster’s truck for the parade, the Pope Family, Olivia Sotello, J.W. Coddou Aldean Stoever, and Ms. Gouldsberry. Lorreta Pauler and Debbie Broun donated St. Mary’s Parish High Hill: 125TH Anniversary and Who’s Who and Where’s Where in the Bible in memory of Sister Sarah Kainer. A memorial was given in memory of Barnabas “Barney” Sommer from Mr. & Mrs. James Ross & Family. Scott Gresham donated Hunting Down Saddam by Robin Moore. The Single Shot Military Handbook was donated by the author, Croft Barker.
The awesome pirate riders included Kevin Velazquez, Shane Mendel, Drina Rodriguez, Lue Rodriguez, Angela Sanders, Darlene Nelson, Jon Beebe, Cindy Lytle – Librarian, Tristian Schwenke –College Student worker, Nicole Gabler –High School Student worker. Wayne Holub and Donna Holub – Assisstant Librarian pulled the float.

July Article 2006

On July 8, 2006, the Schulenburg Public Library held their weekly story hour at the Regency Nursing home.  The children and residents listened to the Schulenburg Boy scouts: Troop 210 read stories, and then later enjoyed punch and cookies.  We would like to thank the regency nursing home for having us there to do the story hour, and the boy scouts who came to read.  The Schulenburg Public Library also holds a story hour on Monday and Wednesday mornings for the Boys and Girls Club of Champion Valley.  The 20 children come and hear delightful stories read by our part-time high school help.

June Atricle 2006

     The summer reading program has begun at the Schulenburg Public Library and is in full force, with great attendance for the Saturday Story Hours and the Summer Reading Program.  Starting, June 3, 2006, 20 children attended the first story hour.  The children listened to butterfly stories and later created their own beautiful butterfly.  The second story hour on June 10, 2006, 20 children listened to farm stories and later crafted their own duck hat.   They also enjoyed coloring their own farm booklet with color pages and farm songs.  24 children attended the nature story hour on June 17th.  They made a Turtle Father’s Day card, colored a Nature packet and Father’s Day color pages for their fathers.  The past story hour on June 24th, 24 children heard racecar stories and later made their own racecar out of snacks.  They also colored car packets and played with toy cars.  After all the excitement of each story hour, the children enjoy a snack of punch and cookies.

     The Schulenburg Public Library also holds a story hour on Monday and Wednesday mornings for the Boys and Girls Club of Champion Valley.  The 20 children come and hear delightful stories read by our part-time high school help.
