Yee haw! Generous Grant from Texas Book Festival 2006-2007

Library has recently received a generous $2,500 grant from the Texas Book Festival and Texas Library Association. The Library’s application was on of the most compelling out of the many requests that the organization received. The organization awarded over $200,000 in 2006. They have given over $2 million in the past 11 years. We were 1 of 60 libraries throughout the state to receive this award.
The Texas Book Festival is an annual event that took place this year on November 3-4, 2007. The 2006 Festival attracted more than 40,000 attendees and featured authors including Senator Barack Obama, Gore Vidal, Maureen Dowd, Amy Sedaris, Frank McCourt and Travis Smiley.
With the continued support of the Austin community, a statewide advisory committee, and hundreds of volunteers, the event has grown each year to become one of the most prestigious literary festivals in the nation. Laura Bush continues to serve as Honorary Chairman.
“The Texas Book Festival has become an anticipated, established event that thousands of Texans look forward to attending each year,” said Board Chair Jan Hughes. “We anticipate many more successful Festivals as we work toward our goal of placing a Texas Book Festival grant in every library in the state.”
The Texas Book Festival celebrates authors and their contributions to the culture of literacy, ideas, and imagination. In late 1995, Laura Bush convened a task force to plan a book festival that would promote the joys of reading and serve to benefit public libraries. Over the past 11 years, the Texas Book Festival has contributed more than $2 million to over 650 public libraries throughout the state, enabling them to expand their book collections and literacy programs.
This grant has allowed us to purchase an amazing variety of books that will greatly aid our patrons. Over 20 books were purchased from Oxford University Press, and over 50 were purchased from Baker & Taylor Books. These books include 101 Law Forms for Personal Use, Cracking the LSAT 2008, How to Start Your Own Business, Atlas of the Medieval World, Protecting Your Assets from a Texas Divorce, Painless Algebra, How to Form a Nonprofit Corporation, and the Oxford Companion to German Literature. These great books have helped many students and other patrons. The Texas Book Festival grant has tremendously helped this library expand its collection.
