How To Maintain Your Own Website

To maintain a healthy website it takes some time and effort.  If your current website is not getting a lot of activity, you may want to check and see if you’re missing one of these three important elements.

1. Fresh Content

If you put something fresh out for a while, at first it’s appealing.  After some time, though, it will eventually lose its freshness and need to be replaced with something else that hasn’t been out yet.

The story of Charlotte’s Web is a good one to illustrate this point.  A pig was worried about being killed for food and befriended a spider that thought she could help with his dilemma.  She decided to write words in her web that described the good things about the pig.  This drew attention from the farmer and his friends and caused them to think the pig was special, and not worth killing for food.  The spider’s plan worked, but not at first.  She had to keep the word on her web fresh to keep people’s interest in not killing her friend.

The same applies to your website.  The word on your part of the world wide web needs to be kept fresh.

2. Spread the Word

When you’ve got fresh content being put up on a regular basis, people will spread the word just like they did when the spider put new words in her web.  People came from all over to see the word in the web, but they first had to be told about it.

Start telling others about your website.  Put it on your business cards.  Attach it to the end of your outgoing emails.  Join online communities and when the opportunity presents itself, provide your website as a solution to a problem.  People need to know you have something worth looking at.

3. Keep Them Coming

As the word spreads you then need to make a way to keep them coming.  Offer a subscription to a newsletter.  Advertise something special that happens every month.  Create ways to keep them coming back for more.

Summary

A good website is a terrible thing to waste.  To maintain a healthy site it’s important to update your content regularly.  Let others know what you have to offer and keep them coming back for more.  Do these things consistently and you’ll never have to worry about the life of your website, ever again.
